USEFUL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

At Hylands Primary we continually share relevant information to our parents which we feel may be useful when supporting their children at home with reading. The majority of this information is communicated through our regular reading newsletters or using our PING communication system.

On this page you will find information about online reading resources your children can use at home to support their reading as well as a range of texts we recommend for each age group.

BUG CLUB

Bug Club is a whole-school online reading program where children are allocated age-appropriate books for them to read at their current reading level. The program is used to supplement and support the development of reading across the school as well as providing further home/school support.

Epic is the world’s largest online children’s subscription book service offering immediate, on-demand access to over 40,000 high-quality illustrated books and chapter books for children ages 12 and under. All children in KS2 receive a class code in order to use this service both at school and at home to  support them in accessing a wide range of literature.

TEACH YOUR MONSTER TO READ

Teach your Monster to Read is an award-winning and DfE recommended resource that makes learning to read fun. It complements our synthetic phonics programme used in school and covers everything from letters and sounds to reading full sentences. It is available as an app to purchase to be used on mobile devices but the PC version linked above is free to use!

READ THEORY

Read Theory is a free online reading resource which offers personalised reading comprehension exercises that children can complete on any type of device. At Hylands Primary, all children in years 4-6 receive a login for this resource for them to access both at school and at home in order to improve their comprehension skills

Books for Topics is a fantastic resource for families as it includes recommended reads for each age group as well as suggested reading lists for all topics across the curriculum. Looking for something fun as a family? Enjoy story time with the free online books and videos, play games, win prizes, test your knowledge in the book-themed quizzes, or even learn how to draw some of your favourite characters. Full of fantastic resources and activities, the Oxford Owl website is a must for parents supporting their children to learn to read. Take a look at their tablet-friendly ebooks which include all of your child’s favourite characters from Biff, Chip and Kipper to the Project X team. There are parents guided and activity suggestions for phonics plus storytelling videos.
