Geography at Hylands

At Hylands we passionately believe that our pupils should be curious about the world in which they live, be engaged in outdoor learning and develop the skills they need to successfully navigate their world.  We shape our pupils geography curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child, inspiring and igniting their sense of wonder about the immediate and wider world and embedding global learning.

It is vital that our teaching of geography should equip our pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, in order for them to question, understand and develop a respect for the world and its people.

We intend that our geography curriculum should enable pupils to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills.

In our teaching of geography we aim also to develop core geographical skills which are built into each area of study, enabling pupils to use a range of data and sources to deepen their own understanding which they can communicate clearly. Our curriculum has been sequenced to enable pupils to gradually widen their sense of scale from their immediate geography to the global.

By engendering a fascination for the complexities of the world in which they live and giving them the tools to investigate and apply geographical skills, we intend to encourage our pupils to become increasingly curious about the world and to develop an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
