Curriculum Overview

Hylands Creative Curriculum

We at Hylands Primary School use the National Curriculum with additional products to help enhance the learning experience for our children. We have ensured that our curriculum is well balanced and wide spread so that all our children can achieve. We want our children to really experience a broad and balanced curriculum through educational visits, sports, the arts plus links with other schools.

Our creative, topic-based curriculum is studied in both Key Stage 1 and 2, and is inspired by the Cornerstones for Education curriculum. Each of the topics studied is based upon an exciting theme and teachers help learners to choose how they want to approach learning about a new topic. All of our topics focus on the ideals of developing knowledge and skills through a series of creative ideas. Engaging learning, developing learning, innovating ideas and expressing opinions and ideas are the foundations to our topic-based approach

In Early Years and at the beginning of Key Stage 1, we follow the Jolly Phonics curriculum for phonics.  Learners are assessed formally with the Year 1 phonics screening test.

In every Cornerstones topic that the children embark upon, English skills are carefully embedded within and as knowledge develops, learners are given the opportunity to use their reading, writing and language skills across all areas of the curriculum.

Maths is studied as a standalone subject giving the learner time to understand the skills required of the national curriculum. These skills are then harnessed and applied to learning across the whole curriculum. Our in-house Aspire maths system ensures that children are able to take the lead in their own knowledge acquisition by allowing them to reflect and make choices as to how to be an even better learner.

Currently, we have access to the digital learning platforms of Learning Village, TT Rockstars, Learning By Questions, Reading Eggs and First News. The children have daily access to Ipads, PCs and Google Chromebooks which are used to further enhance and encourage learning.

We ensure that the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith are embedded within all of our learning.
